Score for 9-year-olds increased in reading compared to 2022; lower-performing 9-year-olds also showed score increases in reading  

Average and percentile scores are reported on the NAEP long-term trend reading scale that ranges from 0 to 500. The results for five selected percentiles show score trends for lower- (10th and 25th percentiles), middle- (50th percentile), and higher- (75th and 90th percentiles) performing students. 

  • Compared to 2022 (the most recent assessment), the 2025 average reading score for 9-year-old students was 4 points higher, with lower-performing students making gains and middle- and higher-performing students showing no significant score changes.
  • Compared to the pre-pandemic scores in 2020, the average reading score and scores at all five selected percentiles for 9-year-olds were not significantly different in 2025.
  • Compared to the first assessment in 1971, the 2025 reading scores for 9-year-olds were higher on average and at all five selected percentiles.
