Student Group Score Trends
Female students scored lower in 38 states and male students scored lower in 26 states
While average scores decreased between 2019 and 2022 for almost all student groups nationally, this overall pattern differed across the states. Compared to 2019, female students scored lower in 38 states in 2022, whereas male fourth-graders scored lower in 26 states. Asian/Pacific Islander students scored lower in 3 states; Black students scored lower in 22 states; Hispanic students scored lower in 28 states; and White students scored lower in 27 states.
Additionally, compared to 2019, fourth-graders who were identified as students with disabilities scored lower in 12 states and higher in 2 states. Students who were identified as English learners scored lower in 15 states.
