Decrease in mathematics scores for lower-performing fourth-grade students compared to 2015
NAEP reports scores at five selected percentiles to show the progress made by lower- (10th and 25th percentiles), middle- (50th percentile), and higher- (75th and 90th percentiles) performing students. Compared to 2015, the 2017 mathematics scores were lower at the 10th and 25th percentiles. Also in 2017, mathematics scores were higher at all five selected percentiles compared to 1990, the first assessment year.

The average mathematics score for fourth-grade students in 2017 was not significantly different compared to 2015, the previous assessment year. The average mathematics score for fourth-grade students increased by 27 points compared to the first assessment year in 1990. Average scores are reported on a NAEP mathematics scale at grade 4 that ranges from 0–500.
