Three out of the four districts that participated in the 2002 assessment posted higher overall scores in 2007

Average scores in NAEP writing for male eighth-grade public school students, by jurisdiction: 2002 and 2007

Findings

  • Average scores for male students increased in each of the four districts that participated in both the 2002 and 2007 assessments: Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles.
  • When compared to large central city schools nationally, average scores in 2007 were higher or comparable for male students in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, New York City, and San Diego, and lower in Cleveland and Los Angeles.
