Classroom Context: Using Calculators

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of eighth-graders were asked about the the type of calculator their students used during math lessons. The full text of the question and corresponding data charts and tables are provided below.

What kind of calculator do your students use during mathematics lessons?
A. None
B. Basic four-function (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
C. Scientific (not graphing)
D. Graphing

In 2011, approximately 46 percent of eighth-graders in the nation had teachers who reported that their students used a scientific calculator during math lessons.
