Classroom Context: Using Calculators

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of eighth-graders were asked about the the type of calculator their students used during math lessons. The full text of the question and corresponding data charts and tables are provided below.

What kind of calculator do your students use during mathematics lessons?
A. None
B. Basic four-function (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
C. Scientific (not graphing)
D. Graphing

In 2011, approximately 38 percent of eighth-graders in large city schools had teachers who reported that their students used a scientific calculator during math lessons. Beginning in 2009, results for charter schools are excluded from the TUDA results if they are not included in the school district’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report to the U.S. Department of Education.
