Classroom Context: Using Calculators

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of fourth-graders were asked about the frequency with which they allowed students to use calculators when taking tests and quizzes. The full text of the question and corresponding data charts and tables are provided below.

Approximately 72 percent of fourth-graders in the nation had teachers who reported never allowing students to use calculators during tests in 2011, which is a lower percentage than in 2005.
