Classroom Context: Emphasis on Algebra

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of fourth- and eighth-graders were asked about the emphasis they placed on algebra and functions. Teachers could select that they placed little or no, moderate, or heavy emphasis on this topic.

Grade 8

Approximately 86 percent of eighth-graders in the nation had teachers who reported putting a heavy emphasis on algebra and functions in 2011, which is higher than the percentage in 2009.
