Classroom Context: Civics Instruction

As part of the 2010 civics assessment, fourth-grade teachers were asked to indicate the percentage of social studies instruction time in which they primarily focused on civics/government. The percentage of students whose teachers responded in each category are below.

Grade 4
Grade 8
Grade 12

The percentage of fourth-graders whose teachers spent none of their social studies instructional time on civics/government decreased since 2006 while the percentage of fourth-graders whose teachers spent 11 to 40 percent of their social studies instructional time on civics/government increased since 2006.
