Classroom Context: Hands-On Activities

 

As part of the 2011 science assessment, teachers of eighth-graders were asked about the amount of time students spent doing hands-on activities or investigations in science. The full text of the question and the percentage of students for each response category are below.

About how often do your science students do each of the following?

A. Never or hardly ever
B. Once or twice a month
C. Once or twice a week
D. Every day or almost every day

Grade 8

In 2011, a lower percentage of students from lower-income families (those eligible for the National School Lunch Program) had teachers who asked them to do hands-on science activities or investigations once a week or more when compared to their peers.
