Eighth-graders attending public schools and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools scored higher in 2011 than in 2009.

Private schools include Catholic and Other Private schools. The category Other Private includes Lutheran, Conservative Christian, and schools with no religious affiliation. While national results reflect the performance of students in public, private, and other types of schools (i.e., Bureau of Indian Education schools and Department of Defense schools), state-level results reflect the performance of public school students only.

Read specific descriptions of what eighth-graders should know and be able to do at the Basic, Proficient, and Advanced science achievement levels.
