  • Eighth-grade students identified as English language learners who could be assessed had higher average science scores in 2005 than in 1996.
  • The average science scores of twelfth-graders identified as being English language learners were not significantly different in 2005 than in previous assessment years.
Trend in fourth-grade average NAEP science scores, by students' status as English language learners

Average scale scores in science, by English language learners, grade 4: 1996, 2000, and 2005

* Significantly different from 2005.
NOTE: ELL = English language learners. Prior to 2005, students were identified as either ELL or non-ELL; in 2005, students were identified as ELL, non-ELL, or formerly ELL. For this figure, non-ELL and formerly ELL data were combined for comparability. The results for English language learners are based on students who were assessed and cannot be generalized to the total population of such students. View complete data with standard errors for grade 4.
