The average reading scores for fourth-graders attending public schools and Catholic schools were higher in 2011 than in 1992, but were not significantly different from the scores in 2009. The average score in 2011 for students attending private schools was not significantly different from the score in 1992 or 2009.

Sample sizes were insufficient to permit reliable estimates for Bureau of Indian Education students in 1992–2003, Department of Defense students in 1992–2000, and other private school students in 2005–2011.

Read specific descriptions of what fourth-graders should know and be able to do at the Basic, Proficient, and Advanced reading achievement levels.
