The average reading score for eighth-graders attending public schools was higher in 2009 than in both 1992 and 2007, but was not always significantly different from the scores in all the assessment years in between.

Sample sizes were insufficient to permit reliable estimates for Bureau of Indian Education students in 1992–2003, Department of Defense students in 1992–1998, and other private school students in 2005 and 2007.
