  • View student performance by various student groups, including gender, race/ethnicity, family income level (based on eligibility for the National School Lunch Program), students with disabilities (SD), and English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Roll the cursor over the map to see more details.
  • Click on any state to reset the focal jurisdiction. The charts below the map will change accordingly. Note that while results for fourth- and eighth-grade students assessed in Alaska, the District of Columbia, Kansas, Nebraska, and Vermont contributed to the results for the nation, sample sizes were not large enough to report results for these states/jurisdictions separately.
  • Use the drop down menu to select to view student performance in terms of average scale scores or achievement levels.

For complete data, visit the NAEP Data Explorer. See scale score results for all students, by gender, race/ethnicity, family income, students with disabilities, and English language learners. See achievement level results for all students, by gender, race/ethnicity, family income, students with disabilities, and English language learners.

The results comparing states to the nation on this web page may differ from those presented in the Science 2009 Report Card. The report card and the web page use different approaches when determining statistical significance to appropriately reflect the comparisons being made. The report card uses a pairwise comparison between the nation and each jurisdiction, since the focus is on comparing each jurisdiction to the nation separately, while the website considers all jurisdictions simultaneously.
