Classroom Context: Discussing New Vocabulary

 

As part of the 2011 reading assessment, eighth-grade students were asked how often they discuss new/difficult vocabulary. The percentage of students who responded in each category are below.

In your English/language arts class this year, how often does your class discuss new or difficult vocabulary?

A. Never or hardly ever
B. Once or twice a month
C. Once or twice a week
D. Every day or almost every day

Grade 4
Grade 8
Grade 12

In the eighth grade, 27 percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch through the National School Lunch Program discussed new or difficult vocabulary every day or almost every day. This percentage was higher than the percentage for non-eligible students (22 percent).
