Classroom Context: Time Spent on Language Arts

 

As part of the 2011 reading assessment, teachers of fourth- and eighth-graders were asked about the number of hours they spent on language arts instruction per week. The full text of the question, and corresponding data charts and tables are provided below.

How many hours of language arts instruction do your students receive in a typical week?

A. Less than 3 hours
B. 3–4.9 hours
C. 5–6.9 hours
D. 7–9.9 hours
E. 10 or more hours

Approximately 58 percent of fourth-graders in large city schools received 10 or more hours of language arts instruction per week in 2011. Beginning in 2009, results for charter schools are excluded from the TUDA results if they are not included in the school district’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report to the U.S. Department of Education.
