Classroom Context: Using Calculators

 

As part of the 2011 mathematics assessment, teachers of eighth-graders were asked about the the type of calculator their students used during math lessons. The full text of the question and corresponding data charts and tables are provided below.

What kind of calculator do your students use during mathematics lessons?
A. None
B. Basic four-function (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
C. Scientific (not graphing)
D. Graphing

Compared to their peers, in 2011 a lower percentage of students from lower-income families (those eligible for the National School Lunch Program) had teachers who reported that their students used scientific calculators than those students who were not eligible.
