Classroom Context: Frequency of Using a Computer

As part of the 2011 writing assessment, eighth- and twelfth-graders were asked how often they use a computer to write for school assignments. The full text of the question, and percentage of students who responded in each category are below.

How often do you use a computer, in and out of school, to write for school assignments (for example, reports, essays, or letters)?

A. Never or hardly ever
B. Once or twice a month
C. Once or twice a week
D. Every day or almost every day

A lower percentage of eighth-graders who are eligible for the National School Lunch Program reported using a computer at least once a week to write for school assignments than did those who were not eligible.
