Three out of the four districts that participated in the 2002 assessment posted higher overall scores in 2007

Average scores in NAEP writing for Black eighth-grade public school students, by jurisdiction: 2002 and 2007

Findings

  • Average scores for Black students in Atlanta and Chicago increased in 2007 when compared to 2002. The apparent differences in Houston and Los Angeles were not statistically significant.
  • When compared to large central city schools nationally, average scores in 2007 were higher or comparable for Black students in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, New York City, and San Diego, and lower in Cleveland and Los Angeles.
