Classroom Context: Historical Periods

As part of the 2010 U.S. history assessment, fourth-grade teachers were asked how many weeks during the school year they spent covering various periods in United States history. The percentage of students whose teachers responded in each category are shown below.

Grade 12

Approximately 74 percent of fourth-graders had teachers who reported covering the historical period before 1815, while 42 percent of students had teachers who did not cover the period from 1945 to the present.
