Target Population and Sample Size

Target Population and Sample Size

At grades 4 and 8, the nationally representative sample in 2005 consisted of a combined sample of students assessed in each participating state, some students in states that did not participate in the state-level assessment, as well as students from nonpublic schools. The table below provides the estimated number of students selected for the assessment (sample size) and the rounded number of students in the population of interest (target population).

The national sample size at grade 12 was 14,300 and the target population was 2,990,000. Read more about the NAEP science sample design.

1 The District of Columbia did not participate due to an insufficient sample size.

Department of Defense Education Activity.

NOTE: The sample size is rounded to the nearest hundred. The target population is rounded to the nearest thousand. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. Some states shown with dashes as not participating in the state assessment (such as New York) may nevertheless have had a few schools participating to provide data for the national sample (but not enough for a representative state sample).
