Average vocabulary scores in NAEP reading at grades 4, 8, and 12, by reading comprehension level: 2009 and 2011

At grade 4, the average vocabulary scores by reading comprehension level are as follows: 177 at the lower level (less than or equal to the 25th percentile); 210 at the lower-middle level (ranging from the 25th to 50th percentiles); 231 at the upper-middle level (ranging from the 50th to 75th percentiles); and 255 at the upper level (greater than the 75th percentile).

At grade 8, the average vocabulary scores by reading comprehension level are as follows: 266 at the lower level (less than or equal to the 25th percentile); 259 at the lower-middle level (ranging from the 25th to 50th percentiles); 278 at the upper-middle level (ranging from the 50th to 75th percentiles); and 299 at the upper level (greater than the 75th percentile).

At grade 12, the average vocabulary scores by reading comprehension level are as follows: 252 at the lower level (less than or equal to the 25th percentile); 288 at the lower-middle level (ranging from the 25th to 50th percentiles); 310 at the upper-middle level (ranging from the 50th to 75th percentiles); and 334 at the upper level (greater than the 75th percentile).

NOTE: The results for grades 4 and 8 are from the 2011 reading assessment, and the results for grade 12 are from the 2009 assessment.
