Lower percentages of students reading for fun

As part of the 2008 long-term trend assessment, students at age 9 were asked about the frequency at which they read for fun on their own time. The full text of the question and the percentage of students who responded within each category are shown below.

How often do you read for fun on your own time?

A. Almost every day
B. Once or twice a week
C. Once or twice a month
D. A few times a year
E. Never or hardly ever

  • The percentage of 9-year-olds who reported that they read for fun "almost every day" decreased from 53 percent in 1984 to 48 percent in 2008.
