About the Civics Assessment

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) civics assessment presents a broad view of how well America's students understand civics and have knowledge of the workings of our civil society. The civics assessment was administered previously in 1998 using the same framework as in 2006.

The civics assessment was developed and reviewed by a committee of civics and measurement experts to capture the goals of the 2006 civics framework. The National Assessment Governing Board, through a comprehensive national process involving civics teachers, researchers, measurement experts, policymakers, and members of the general public, created the framework, which describes the goals of the assessment and the kinds of exercises it ought to feature. The Civics Development Committee was instrumental in the development of the assessment.
